Tens of thousands of spectators gathered on both sides of Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour to watch the New Year countdown extravaganza.

As the clock struck the midnight hour, the sky of Hong Kong was illuminated by a brilliant five-minute pyrotechnic show on 10 landmark buildings along the harbour front.

Hong Kong Tourism Board, the organizer of the "Hong Kong's New Year Countdown Celebrations" says the stunning extravaganza is intended to signify a bright and hopeful New Year for Hong Kong and the world.

Spectators were given inflatable cheering sticks to create a joyful festive atmosphere in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza.

Local celebrities and Olympic volunteers gathered below Beijing's ancient bell tower for a live broadcast show to bring in 2009.

Gui Yu, a student from northern China, said he was positive China hoped a quieter 2009 would give China a chance to develop.
